Antique Kitchen Hardware
AN TIQUE
KITCHEN HARDWARE
So, you're looking for antique kitchen hardware.
On your quest for antique kitchen hardware, you can do one of three things (the 1st and
2nd options are probably not the best - take a look at the 3rd!!):
Option 1: Scour
auctions and garage sales to try and find that perfect piece of antique kitchen hardware (or pieces if you're looking for handles and knobs).
Some of you will actually enjoy this - good for you - really, I commend you.
I, personally, do not enjoy scouring auctions. While it might be fun for one Sunday, or even two, to actually find something you like requires tons of time (and who has tons of time?). Then, when you finally do find
something, those authentic, old finishes will be severely tarnished. Some authentic antique
kitchen hardware finishes, like oil rubbed bronze, are supposed to look that
way. There is no fixing to them, so you're stuck with the tarnish if you don't
like it. If you do, by some miracle, get the tarnishing off, it will soon come
back again.
Option 2: You can look for off-line
or online catalogs that are filled with good reproduction antique hardware, and
there are some great companies out there. The hardware you will find will probably be authentic looking and beautiful,
but it will have a price-tag. You'll have to decide for yourself if you really want a reproduction look, or if you simply want the STYLE
of antique hardware. If you are looking for a style or a feel of
antique hardware, then the 3rd option will be your best bet.
Option 3: (And probably
your best bet) You can purchase New -
Antique Kitchen
Hardware that has an antique look and feel to it, without the price tag of reproduction, or the uncertainty of actual authentic pieces of antique hardware.
Some beautiful finish choices in new antique hardware include:
- Burnished Brass
- Antique Copper
- Antique English
- Antique Brass
- Antique Nickel
- Antique Rust
- Antique Satin Bronze
- Distressed/Antique/Cracked Ceramics
- Hammered finishes (like black or bronze)
- Oil Rubbed Bronze
- Period Brass
- Regency Brass
- Weathered finishes (brass, copper, or nickel)
- Rustic finishes (brass, bronze, iron)
- Weathered Copper
- Wrought Iron
Even retro - i.e. stainless steel or polished chrome
- which isn't that old, but is
considered antique by some, is easily found in today's hardware styles.
You can't go wrong with new handles, and there are so many antique hardware finishes in the new styles, there is really no reason not to go with
them.
